AUREL SCHMIDT’S TRASH DOLLS

Canadian artist Aurel Schmidt has lived in downtown New York for more than 20 years. She is known for her meticulously detailed mixed-media drawings that explore themes of vulnerability, mortality, and societal decay.

Her ongoing series Trash Dolls portrays figures made from cigarette butts, plastic containers, condoms, dollar bills, candy wrappers, and corks, subverting traditional ideas of beauty by utilising the “detritus of desire”.
